Filed under: Food/Drink Franchises, Franchise Opps

Over the next several weeks I’m going to be showcasing the top companies listed in the Entrepreneur’s Top 500. Each of these Franchise Opportunities deserves a little bit better exploration about what makes them so successful.
Subway started out in 1965, when a 17 year old kid named Fred DeLuca and his family friend, Peter Buck, opened Pete’s Super Submarines in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The tiny shop that Fred opened with a $1,000 loan from his friend, would earn enough to put him through college. After have some struggles in the first few years, DeLuca changed the name of the company to Subway, and began franchising in 1974.
In recent years Subway has managed to carve out their success by offering a fresh, healthy alternative to most other fast food chains. Subway offers franchise opportunities all over the world.
The company is privately held with 650 employees.
